Falling in Love with HSTs

After two quilts that were laden with half square triangles, made one at a time, I was entirely over making HSTs. They took so much time to mark, sew and trim! I have a quilt that is nearly ready to assemble into rows, but after trimming hundreds of one at a time HSTs, I stopped. I was completely done. Even though I was down to the last 20 minutes of trimming HST blocks, I had a moment where I felt like the pattern writer wasn't nice to have included all the HSTs.
So this is my past experience with a bazillion HSTs made one at a time. I was not a fan.
I can't believe that pattern writers don't share this method that makes them a breeze. When I learned this method, I realized that HSTs don't have to be so hard. In fact, they became a pleasure to make. The Magic 8 at a Time Half Square Triangle Method will revolutionize your sewing.
Let me say that again. The Magic 8 at a Time Half Square Triangle Method will revolutionize your sewing!
Let's jump straight to video 2 in this series, which covers all the practicalities of how to make HSTs. (There is an easy formula that works for any size you need to make!)
See? It's so much easier this way!
I went from having two unfinished quilts (that used the one at a time method), to choosing more quilts that feature half square triangles! Below is video 1 in the HST series. Can you tell I am gushing about my newfound love of the Magic 8 at a Time HST Method?
note: Jen Kingwell fans will love this fabric!
So that's the story of how I went from really avoiding HSTs, to loving them because of the Magic 8 at a Time HST Method.
I'm doing a Live Sew Along each 2nd Sunday during 2026 on YouTube. It's specifically for our Boho Heart Quilt Along, but everyone is welcome to participate. Below is June's Live about Magic Eight at a Time Half Square Triangles and turning them into pinwheel blocks.
Thanks for watching! Please share your HST tips in the comments!
Happy Sewing,
Holly Jo
P.S. Share this with your favorite pattern writers, so they can help quilters out!
