Today we popped into a wonderful quilt store in DFW. We were on the hunt for wine colored fabric for my daughter’s wedding quilt. Guests will sign blocks with well wishes. She didn’t find a fabric she was certain about, but I absolutely did! Quilt Country quiltcountry has a ton of fun fabrics and I loved several sample quilts they had on display.
The first pic is a sample whose pattern and kit will be available soon. I loved those stripey diamonds! The next one is Villa Rosa One Step done with a lot of Kaffe x Morris fabrics. I’ll have leftovers after my Ten Sisters project, and this will be great for that fabric collection mixed with the men’s shirts I have collected.

We both admired the Moda Peaches fabric.

While she was looking at a Kaffe sample quilt that contained some of brandonmablyJumble, my daughter had the idea to design a quilt with all animal prints. By the way, this store has all the Kaffe Fassett Collective fabric.

And last, this fun angel quilt that looks like it could be improv.

Our quilting grandmothers were absolute rock stars. This vintage quilt is full of graphic fabrics and pops of color. It’s entirely hand stitched. I got it at a flea market for $40. There are a few tears that need repairing and one of the red fabrics bled, but overall it’s in great shape.

What are y’all working on today?
I’m cutting out giant triangles for a selvedge star quilt. I got yardage of this magenta fabric at an estate sale. The magenta is the foundation fabric. After I draw kite lines, I’ll sew selvedges I’ve saved out to the narrow points of the triangle.

Ruby Star Society has a fabric that is reprints of all their cheery selvedges together. I have a bit of that I’ll intersperse with my collected fabric edges.

I wore my grandmother’s ring to market. I thought of her whenever I noticed it, and wished she could be with me to see the wonder of market. Earlier this year my mother walked me through her own quilt collection, and I was so surprised when she said my grandmother made this beautiful glorified 9 patch quilt. I’d only ever seen her quilt preprinted squares she painted with acrylic paint. She had a quilt of polyester double knit she’d put on the floor when we watched tv, but I didn’t know she made it. 🧵
The funny thing about this quilt is that I’d already saved pictures of glorified nine patch quilts to my Pinterest board. I want to make one someday! Do you think our preferences can be genetic?

I wish my grandmother could have seen the Houston International Quilt Show with me. She would have been aghast at the price of parking, and flummoxed by abstract art quilts, but I think she would have enjoyed it. This weekend I started a scrappy patchwork quilt. The first photo is my inspiration color palette. The second is the stack of fabrics I ended up using. The photo I saved was what I pulled up at the fabric stores to help me get a similar vibe. You can see that several of my fabrics have a texture, which reminds me of the chippy paint.

It was a great weekend at the farmhouse. I made curtains. This is my reminder to myself that I do not like making curtains. I was happy with one set but not the other. This easy quilt top was a really good thing in the midst of a crazy day finishing up the farmhouse. At 6:30 am, predawn, an unexpected vehicle slowly cruised by, then turned around and parked in front of the house. I was up and across the yard to check it out. It turned out that a concrete crew decided to start a project. So on the girls first day of classes, a bobcat was digging up the back yard at dawn. By 7:30am they broke the main water line into the house. The girls were troopers and took the issues in stride. I hosted two crews working inside the farmhouse while they went to school. A lovely rainy afternoon let me piece this quilt top. Today’s design wall was the rv bed. Here’s my rv ironing station today: I’m pressing fat quarters at the desk area and then cutting them on the dinette table. This one is breaking my heart. I just pulled it out to clean it for the farmhouse. It’s labeled with initials and a room number. This quilt went with someone who was in nursing care. I hope the owner was proud of their work, because this scrappy beauty is gorgeous. I hope being snuggled under it brought the hands that made it comfort. What saddens me is that this quilt never made it back to the maker’s family. I bought it at a flea market for $40. 🧵 🪡 Maybe it was just waiting for someone who would appreciate its artistry. As great a vintage quilt as this is, I think it has elements we think of as modern- lines, bold colors, negative space, creative use of materials, pattern. Do you see it? I worked on a different kind of piecing this week. We are putting this old house back together, and it’s coming together nicely. Tonight I pieced together the floor covering in anticipation of appliances being delivered. The only hexies I’ve touched lately have been tiles. I unrolled my Kaffe Diamonds quilt recently just to take stock. I have a lot more diamond cutting to do, but I was relieved that I don’t need to order more of any fabrics. I was at a quilting retreat in Camp Wood, TX that happens to have a great fabric store with a very good selection of Kaffe. I found my binding and a great big Kaffe floral for the back. In May I cut & put together strip sets for my #terryrowland #colorwashquilt ✂️ This week, I grabbed a ziplock bag of my strip sets and worked on them when I needed a simple sewing task to give my brain a break. Yesterday I got to help a young man who ripped his new jeans, which meant applying an iron on patch, but I didn’t have an iron! I found a set of 19 scrappy churn dash blocks at Antique Alley. They all have white in common, so I’ll set them with white sashing and binding.
